CSL Supports Upper Band RFID in Europe

CSL expands global coverage of RFID readers by adding Upper Band support in Europe. The upper band 915 to 921 MHz adoption by most European countries will enable CSL UHF RFID readers to have higher performance as well as to be more universally operable, since the channels overlap with those used in North America and beyond. The benefits of the upper band —as opposed to the traditional 865 to 868 MHz band.

  • Longer read range due to inherent higher antenna gain
  • Higher tag rates: up to four times higher
  • Simplified system design for global use

Performance Benefits

The performance benefits of the upper band are significant. Allowable reader transmission power doubles from lower ETSI band to upper ETSI band. Additionally, reader channel spacing doubles from 600 kHz to 1200 kHz and the transmit spectrum width broadens from 200 KHz to 400 kHz. The tag backscatter power allowance rises tenfold from 10 µW in the lower band to 100 µW in the upper band.

  • Greater Read Accuracy and Speed: Essential for reading a large number of tags quickly in dynamic environments like warehouses and portals.
  • Lower Power Tag Operation: The increased reader power allows tags to harvest more energy, enabling the use of smaller, lower-cost, or higher-performing tags.

Why It Matters

System integrators can deploy CSL RFID readers and tags that achieve consistent performance across the globe. This will increase the adoption of RFID and lead to new use cases in Europe and beyond.

The common frequency range will allow tag manufacturers to design smaller, better-performing, and cheaper tags that work globally. This benefits system integrators by increasing the range of items that can be tagged and reducing the total solution cost for the end-user.

In summary, the European RFID Upper Band is the key that unlocks true global RFID deployment for the industry. It transforms system design from a complicated, region-by-region exercise into a simplified, high-performance, and unified set of frequencies, making it a monumental step for system integrators and the entire RFID ecosystem.

Key Takeaway: Enhanced Supply Chain Visibility

For global enterprises, a unified frequency simplifies the tracking of goods as they move across continents. A single tag can be read by CSL readers in Europe, North America, Asia, and other regions, which is crucial for modern logistics and supply chain management.

How to get started

The CS710S is the first reader to be certified for ETSI upper band use. The reader must be purchased using the specific order code for the upper band reader configuration. End customers can purchase a new upper band CS710S from distributors in your region. CSL Partners can use the order code below to purchase new readers.

CS710S Upper Band Order Code: CS710S-9

Note: Any ETSI lower band RFID readers currently in use cannot be upgraded to meet the new upper band standard. A new physical reader must be purchased.

All inquiries about the new CS710S upper band support can be answered by filling out the form below.
